As far as sRGB coverage goes, the Gigabyte M32U is better than the LG 55UD9FN. However, the ‘HDR experience’ of the LG 55″ isn’t as good as you might think.

On the other hand, the Gigabyte M32U does have better viewing angles, response time, and ergonomics. In fact, the M32U has more HDMI 2.1 ports, which can be useful for Xbox Series S|X users. Moreover, the IPS panel gives a smoother appearance than the 28″ version.

Another key feature is the IPS glow. This warm golden-grey shade blooms out with the angle of your eyes. Interestingly, the hue of this shade appeared to be slightly pinker at the bottom of the screen, while the top of the image was relatively dark.

To test the sRGB quality of the monitor, I ran a series of Lagom tests. This was to see if the monitor would show any visible shifts of color with the movements of the user’s head.

While the tests show that the M32U monitor does have minor color changes, it didn’t produce clear saturation or gamma shifts. Furthermore, the ‘HDR’ color gamut isn’t particularly strict.


VESA DisplayHDR 400 certification

If you’re after a stretched-out version of a budget 1440p monitor, then the Gigabyte M32U is worth considering. It has a low-profile stand and a matte plastic finish. The monitor is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified. This is the lowest level of HDR certification and does not include gamma enhancement.

Despite its modest size, the Gigabyte M32U boasts a 144Hz refresh rate. It’s compatible with DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1. In addition, it has three USB 3.0 ports on the back.

The M32U has a slick metal stand and a matte plastic finish. But its HDR performance isn’t stellar.

While it supports FreeSync, you’ll need to enable Adaptive-Sync in the OSD. Aim Stabilizer Sync uses the monitor’s backlight to synchronize with the display’s refresh rate.

The M32U has a variety of Picture Mode presets. Most of them alter the OSD’s settings. You can also adjust the ‘Super Resolution’ sharpness filter.

The M32U is VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified, the lowest of the HDR certifications. It’s also an sRGB monitor. For a full HDR experience, you’ll want to turn on ‘Use HDR’ in Windows.

There’s a bit of banding in the image on solid backgrounds. But it’s not enough to impede the performance of the display.

While the ‘Dark Enhance’ feature does a decent job of lifting up dark shades, it does little to enhance the hues in light shades. As a result, the display can’t account for complex combinations of shades.

The HDR10 pipeline boosts dark shades, smooths gradients, and increases the range of nuanced shades. However, there’s not much control over the gamma curve.

Unsurprisingly, the HDR M32U’s color gamut is only 87% DCI-P3. But it’s the fact that it supports 10-bit per color channel that’s noteworthy. Unlike gamma enhancement, which artificially raises detail by lightening shades, HDR10’s pipeline gives a natural-looking uplift in darker regions.


Local dimming feature

The Gigabyte M32U monitor is an excellent gaming display but lacks some of the features found in more expensive monitors. A key advantage of this monitor is its ability to display 4k @ 120Hz and take advantage of console gaming.

This is achieved by enabling local dimming, a feature that allows individual screen zones to adjust the backlight. This works in a similar way to SDR, preventing large bands of the screen from being brighter than they should be.

This feature isn’t as effective as it could be, however. While the mirroring of the sRGB colors on the screen did happen, it wasn’t very noticeable. We also didn’t see any clear shifts in the brightness of the texts in Lagom, a game that uses a wide range of shades.

The local dimming feature is a little more effective, but the effects aren’t as dramatic. Some darker backgrounds were dulled as the darker content took up more brightness. Also, the contrast ratio wasn’t as good as it could have been.

The other major feature of the Gigabyte M32U is its IPS panel, which provides superior viewing angles and a more uniform response time. It’s also VESA DisplayHDR 400 certified. That’s not the best certification, but it is a good start.
